Wong Shun Leung

Sifu Wong Shun Leung is considered by many to have been one of the greatest Ving Tsun fighters. Throughout the 50's and 60's he tested and refined his Ving Tsun by way of numerous encounters and challenge matches on the rooftops of Hong Kong, and gained the reputation of "Gong Sau Wong", or "King of Talking Hands".

To support his testing and refining, Wong would discuss his experiences at length with his teacher, the legendary Grandmaster Yip Man. It was this and his practical way of thinking which allowed him to leave behind a legacy – the Wong Shun Leung Method of Ving Tsun.

Before he ever set foot in Yip Man's academy, Wong Shun Leung had already trained in Western boxing and Tai Chi. According to accounts passed down by his students, he first went looking for Yip Man's school out of curiosity about Ving Tsun's reputation, arriving during a quiet period when several senior students were away. After working through a handful of the students present, Wong was matched against Yip Man himself and was comprehensively outclassed. Rather than walking away, he asked to join the school – a decision that set the direction for the rest of his life.

What followed was more than two decades of close study under Yip Man, running through until the grandmaster's death in 1972. During this period Wong Shun Leung became known for something unusual in the traditional kung fu world of the time: a willingness to step outside the training hall and test his skills against practitioners of other styles in beimo, the informal, largely unregulated challenge matches that took place on Hong Kong rooftops. Estimates of his win count vary depending on the source, with some students placing the number in the dozens and others suggesting well over a hundred, but the consistent thread across accounts is that he was rarely, if ever, beaten.

What separated Wong Shun Leung from many contemporaries wasn't just his fighting record, but how he used it. Every encounter became data. He would return to Yip Man, break down what had worked, what hadn't, and why, then adjust his understanding of Ving Tsun's structure accordingly. This feedback loop between live testing and technical theory is the foundation of what later became known as the Wong Shun Leung Method, or WSLVT – an approach that treats Ving Tsun less as a fixed set of forms to be memorised and more as a framework of principles to be proven under pressure.

That practical, almost engineering-like mindset extended to how Wong Shun Leung explained concepts to students. He was known for using everyday logic and simple analogies rather than abstract or mystical language, stripping techniques down to their functional purpose. It's this clarity that made his teaching accessible to Western students later in his career, and it's a major reason WSLVT has spread well beyond Hong Kong in the decades since his passing.

Wong Shun Leung's connection to Bruce Lee remains one of the more discussed aspects of his legacy. While Bruce Lee was formally enrolled at Yip Man's school, it's widely held among Ving Tsun historians that Wong Shun Leung played the larger hands-on role in his development, sparring with him regularly and shaping much of his early combat understanding before Lee left for the United States.

Wong Shun Leung continued teaching and refining his method until January 28, 1997, when he passed away at 62 after unexpectedly falling into a coma sixteen days earlier. He never wrote a definitive manual, choosing instead to pass his understanding directly to students such as David Peterson, Gary Lam (Lam Man-Hog), Jerry Yeung, Li Hang-Cheong, Chan Kim Man, John Smith and many others, who carried the method forward in the same open, hands-on spirit in which they received it.

In honour of Wong Shun Leung's teachings, the WSLVT system is taught in an open, honest and unselfish manner, just as Wong Shun Leung taught his students.
